Portable Gas Generators

Portable gas generators are an option when choosing a generator. Those that run on gasoline however, have a couple of important differences with those that run on diesel or other fuel types. Gasoline powered generators also have a couple of advantages and disadvantages. Here are some important considerations related to gas generators.

  • One great advantage of gasoline generators is the availability of gas. Just like diesel, you can find gasoline in nearly any place you are in. This means that your portable generator can be used in many different places even if you are far away from home. You can just keep gas in small containers if you need to travel around with your generator.

  • Gasoline is definitely expensive. The steady increase in the prices of gas is a sign that you should expect to spend more to keep your gasoline generator going. Gas generators are therefore not advisable for industrial applications where a lot of gas consumption is expected.

  • The expensive price tag of gasoline is also a problem because gas engines consume more fuel than diesel engines. Half a load of diesel can already accomplish what a full gas tank can. In other words, diesel generators are still more fuel efficient than portable gas generators.

  • Gas generators are dependable. They may not always be as sturdy as diesel generators though. Depending on your generator model, a gas generator may also not be meant for rough transport and use.

  • Gasoline can power generators for many different functions. You can use your generator for outdoor activities, small appliances, light construction work and even marine work.

  • Portable gas generators can be dangerous. This is if gas is not properly handled or stored. Since gas is highly flammable, a small vapor or liquid leak can already cause a fire. Gas spark plug ignitions can also accidentally cause fires. To prevent fires, you have to make sure your generator is in working order and your fuel is stored outdoors out of reach of children and pets.

  • As we all know, gas generators also present the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. But this can only happen through the careless use of a unit. Gas generators should always be kept aside and as far away as possible from the indoor part of your property. You should also periodically check for gas leaks and install carbon monoxide sensors to prevent accidental poisoning.

  • It may be hard to estimate when to replenish fuel stores for portable gas generators. This is because the shelf life of gas can’t go beyond a year. This is a problem because you want fuel to be available when a calamity strikes. At the same time, a calamity may not strike within the year. Buying gas only when a calamity strikes may not be a good idea since gas may not always be available when disasters strike.

Portable gas generators may seem like they have a lot of disadvantages. You may still however, have your own reasons for preferring these units. There are many generator model options for you to choose from should you opt for a gas generator.
